The first award of the major film award season in the UK has been announced today (Thursday 3 January) as BAFTA revealed their nominees for the Rising Star Award.

The Rising Star honours the stars who had truly had an outstanding year on the big screen and by the list of these five talented performers, BAFTA have chosen brilliantly.

The first name and easily the lead contender is Jessie Buckley. The Irish actress caught the eye of the film industry with her critically acclaimed performance in Beast and this year Wild Rose comes out and blew away critics and film reporter during the festival season last year.

It’ll be in my top five films of this year, it is a must see for all film fans.

About the nomination, Buckley said “I would like to thank both BAFTA and the jury from the bottom of my heart for putting me forward for the EE Rising Star Award – it’s a huge honour and a fantastic category to be nominated for, especially as the winner is decided by film fans at home.”

The next name announced was Cynthia Erivo and what a 2018 it was for the Tony, Grammy and Emmy winning actress.

We first saw her in Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale opposite the likes of Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth and Jon Hamm. This was quickly followed up by starring next to Viola Davos, Gina Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki in the Steve McQueen directed Widows.

As for 2019, it’ll be a busy year again starring in Chaos Walking with fellow Brits Tom Holland, David Oyelowo and Daisy Ridley. Elsewhere, she joins Leslie Odom Jr and Freida Pinto in John Ridley’s Needle in a Timestack.

“I’m both delighted and grateful to BAFTA and the jury panel for nominating me for the 2019 EE Rising Star Award. It means a lot to be recognised for doing something that I love and I’m really looking forward to the ceremony in London,” stated Erivo.

He has won acclaim for his roles in The Killing Of A Sacred Dear opposite Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman and as part of the assembled cast in Christopher Nolan’s stellar Dunkirk.

This year, Irish actor Barry Keoghan was praised for his performance in Bart Layton’s American Animals for which he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor at BIFA.

Commenting on the nomination, Keoghan said “I want to thank both BAFTA and of course the jury for this incredible honour. It’s really exciting to be put forward for the EE Rising Star Award. Over the years, I have watched so many actors and actresses that I admire be nominated in this category, so to think that I’m now on that list is an amazing feeling.”

After his superb performance in Boots Riley’s indie hit Sorry To Bother You, Lakeith Stanfield is a name to keep an eye out for.
You probably remember him starring in the cult hit Get Out and as Darius in Donald Glover’s series Atlanta.

Talking about receiving the nomination, “I can’t begin to express my gratitude to BAFTA and the jury for this nomination” said Stanfield. “The calibre of previous EE Rising Star Award winners and nominees is incredible, and I feel honoured to be counted among them. It’s a very proud moment indeed.”

The final nominee will likely be the favourite to win due to her role as Shuri in Marvel Studio’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War and will get the Marvel fans voting.

Meanwhile, Letitia Wright looks to have good 2019 starring opposite 2016 EE Rising Star John Boyega in Hold Back The Stars directed Mike Cahill.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be chosen by BAFTA and the jury as a candidate for the EE Rising Star Award. It means a lot that my work has been recognised, especially in the country I’ve grown up in, and that I get to share this recognition with so many talented actors, said Wright.

As previously stated, Wright will have the Marvel vote and that’s not to take away from her incredible performance in Black Panther and she’ll be a leading light in the UK film scene. However, I do think Buckley deserves it because she is spectacular!

The dark horse will be Stanfield, but I do believe he’ll be getting a BAFTA Best Actor nomination.
