The Rebirth of DC Films

Jon Berg and Geoff Johns will be co-running the newly formed DC Films.

After the huge disappointment fallout from critics and fans towards Batman v Superman, Warner Bros have decided to place Jon Berg and Geoff Johns in the “Kevin Feige role” for newly created DC Films. This will be a studio that will be handling DC movies moving forward.

The Hollywood Reporter has also revealed this is part of Warner Bros putting certain executive producers on specific genres.

Anyway, staying with the shake up within WB/DC Films, Berg and Johns will co-run the genre as Berg is a seasoned executive producer and was already working on BvS, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League. While Johns is the biggest DC Comics nerd, who was instrumental to bring TV shows such as Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl.

With this Warner Bros are hoping these two will emulate what Kevin Feige has done with Marvel Studios, but Warner Bros wants to remain filmmaker-driven. As part of their new jobs will be producers on the Justice League movies.

The shake up is due to the critics and fans not responding well to BvS and Zack Snyder, with the perceived missteps, how characters were brought to the screen and the dark tone. The film is still profitable making $870 worldwide, but it’s not the home run the studio wanted.

Compare to Marvel Studio’s Captain America: Civil War, which is heading towards the $1 billion mark in less than two weeks of release in America. So Warner is course correcting.

Personally, I think this a good move for everyone involved Warner have two people who are highly respected in their roles and mixing Berg’s film knowledge and Johns’ comic and character knowledge can only mean good things.

It’s also a good thing of Snyder, as this looks more likely Justice League Part One will be his last DC directed film and he’ll be free to follow other projects and probably stay on at DC Films as a producer.

The course correction started with Ben Affleck made an executive producer on Justice League giving him more creative involvement on the film and Batman moving forward.

The next thing was removing Seth Grahame – Smith as director of The Flash. As the studio wasn’t confident in a first time director handling a $150 million dollar plus movie and they’ll now look for a more seasoned filmmaker to take the reigns.

THR also stated, the studio is also working on smoothing the third act of Suicide Squad and after massively positive reaction to the film’s trailers featuring DC villains. The studio wants to make sure that David Ayer’s directed action film not only meets audiences’ expectations but exceeds them.

Also, just to put to bed the reshoots WEREN’T for adding humour, they were doing additional photography so most likely it was just reshooting previous scenes.

As I said, I think this is a good move, as long as they keep with the tone (I seem to be the only one who likes the dark tone) and releasing kick ass soundtracks.

I also think will be hearing a lot more about Warner Bros and DC Films in the next couple of weeks.
