This will be the last of the original Disney/Pixar films for a while as they focus on releasing a couple of sequels, but my god they went on hiatus with a magical, colourful bang.

Coco follows the story of Miguel (Gonzalez) as he follows his dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt), despite his family’s generational ban on music. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Hector (Bernal) the two embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the story behind Miguel’s family history.

Coco is a truly delightful, beautiful, heartfelt and funny film, so basically another incredible film from the people of Disney/Pixar to the point it might actually be one of my favourites from the studio.

The animation is truly stunning and when it goes into the Land of the Dead I let out an audible “wow’ the last time I did that was for Zootropolis and these visuals knock those out of the park.

The voice cast does a wonderful job and you route and invest in Miguel’s story and it awesome to see another culture on the big screen in this way for the wider world to see and it still kept the Mexican heart and it was important to hear them speak Mexican as well.

The music is great with some catchy songs and it’ll be winning every animation award going, but it did feel very samey to other Disney/Pixar films for example Up comes to mind.

Additionally, you could possibly see similarities to the Guillermo del Toro-produced animated film, The Book of Life. However, I don’t see a massive issue with that as long as one helps the other.

Even though it does follow the same beat as Up it didn’t bother me too much as I was enjoying the film and the visuals around me and I thought I might’ve left without shedding a tear but in the end, Coco got me.

Verdict

Another home run for Disney/Pixar as Coco is a delightful, beautiful, magical story about the Land of the Dead.
