2019 is the year of Captain Marvel after Warner Bros have officially announced the release date for the DC Comics superhero.

Shazam! will be flying to theatres on April 5, 2019 (via The Hollywood Reporter) nearly a month after Marvel releases their own Captain Marvel film starring Oscar winner Brie Larson.

This was the most sense as WB did lay down this date for an untitled DC Film and now he’ll be the first DCU film to be released that year before Wonder Woman 2 on November 1.

David F. Sandberg will be directing the film with Disney star Asher Angel as Billy Batson, an orphan who becomes an adult superhero by a wizard. I know, it’s mental.

Batson turns into Shazam! and will be played Zachary Levi, who is a mega comic book nerd and appeared in Thor: The Dark World and Ragnarok as Asgardian warrior Fandral.

Mark Strong seemingly confirmed this weekend he’ll be returning to the DC Universe playing another villain after playing Sinestro in the Green Lantern film and this time he’ll be Shazam’s nemesis Dr Sivana.

I’m sure I’m confusing a lot of you with the differences between the two characters, minus the fact DC’s Cap is a bloke and Marvel’s is a badass woman. Before being bought by DC Comics, the then-Captain Marvel was created in the 1940s under Fawcett Comics before becoming Shazam! at DC after a lawsuit.

Once DC stop publishing Captain Marvel comics, Marvel gained the trademark in the sixties and to keep it they to release one issue every year. After different incarnations, Carol Danvers was the one who brought the character to a wider audience and the most popular one to this day.

Also, Shazam! is an acronym and the powers of each of the Greek Gods – Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles & Mercury.

Shazam! will be released Friday 5th April.
