Director – Brad Bird
Starring (Voiced By) – Holly Hunter; Craig T. Nielson; Samuel L. Jackson; Sarah Vowell; Hunk Milner; Bob Odenkirk; Sophia Bush; Catherine Keener.
As Incredibles 2 finally hits UK cinemas there have been questions about it. Will it live up to the 15 years we’ve had to wait to finally see what happens when the Parr family took on the Underminer?
Incredibles 2 follows Helen/Elastigirl (Hunter) as she is called on to lead the campaign to rebuild the Supers’ reputation, while Bob/Mr. Incredible (Nelson) becomes a stay at home dad looking after Violet (Vowell), Dash (Milner) and baby Jack-Jack.

Director Bird may have wanted this film to focus on Helen, but this is pulled away from her as Jack-Jack steals the film as we follow him discovering his powers to some of the best, laugh out loud moments in the film.
Additionally, I didn’t understand why this was an Elastigirl led film, while I love the character and the set pieces show off how badass she is. I’ve always thought the character had a lot of screen time in the original film. However, it is good to see a man called Mr. Incredible to realise how hard it was to be an incredible dad.

Sadly, however, this film doesn’t live up to the 15-year hype we’ve all built in our heads and maybe it could never do so. The issue is the fact we begin where the film ended in 2003 and maybe it would’ve been interesting if the Underminer stuff was a flashback and we’re now 15-years forward and Jack-Jack is a teenager etc as a lot of us grew up with these characters.
Maybe we and Disney-Pixar waited too long, if it wasn’t going to happen say 10 years ago, it might’ve been for the best if it was just a standalone film.
It’s not to say it’s a bad film, it differently isn’t. All the voice performances were great especially Hunter, Nielson and Bird as Edna Mode. Samuel L. Jackson gets a lot more screen time as Frozone and the villain reveals was a genuine surprise.

Additionally, the animation and design were utterly beautiful. Michael Giacchino does a good job with the score mixing superhero with the spy genre.
However, at the end of the day, it didn’t even meet the heights of the original films (again maybe we shouldn’t expect it would) but it’s a solid, well-written film with great performances and beautiful animation.
Finally, the opening animation short is called BAO and it’s beautiful and emotional, I was fighting back the tears.

Verdict
A solid return for Incredibles 2 with some good things and Jack-Jack is the reason the film is enjoyable and funny, but it’s just fine.
