Warner Bros & DC Films SDCC 2018 Review

Well, it happened not only did Warner Bros become they own Hall H this year but became kings of comic con with a fantastic presentation.

I’m sure people will say “but Marvel wasn’t there, so they had an open goal” and that is true but the studio took the opportunity and scored a shit tonne of goals.

The presentation began as I predicted with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and honestly Ezra Miller coming out as Todd from Super Mario Bros won comic con by himself, he looked fabulous.

One of the many things I got wrong was Johnny Depp did, in fact, show up and in character no less and gave a monologue and by the sounds of the Twitter coverage the boos, when he showed up in the trailer, turned into woos.

I didn’t think he’d there just because of the issues people behind the scenes would have to deal with making sure Amber Heard didn’t see him. I hope The Hollywood Reporter or Variety makes some contacts and find the story because I think it’s fascinating.

As for the trailer itself, I loved it and I’m looking forward to seeing this story going darker and continue the where the first film left us and by the sense of the last moments of the trailer and sexy Jude Law Dumbledore, it’s also going to be Hogwarts heavy.

I even liked Depp as Grindelwald, even though I’m still pissed it’s not Colin Farrell.

Next up was a LEGO Movie 2 panel with exclusive new footage shown. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was up next and that trailer was fucking awesome.

Obviously, we’re all going to see the monsters and Godzilla punishing their faces in, but by god the design and graphic, especially with Mothra and those wings. However, I do like the sci-fi backstory as now the world knows of this monster that the only way to save humanity is to bring this other monsters back from their hibernation.

That was the last of the Warner Bros part of the presentation, which was a surprise as I thought the studio might post a new Mowgli trailer and panel. I guess they wanted to give enough time to DC Films and the DCU.

The first DC film showcased Wonder Woman 1984 with Patty Jenkins, a sunburnt (or heavily tanned) Chris Pine and Gal Gadot, who just angelic.

Director Jenkins talks about the film and why it’s set in the 80s and why Pine is back. Gadot added this film isn’t a sequel but as brand new Wonder Woman adventure much like Tim Burton’s Batman films.

Jenkins goes on to say they’re on week three of a 20-week shoot and then showed some exclusive Hall H coverage and they sound wonderful.

Shazam! followed up next and we got a first official trailer, not the 90-second teaser I was predicting, and it was exactly what I wanted to see as it’s the superhero version of Big and Jack Dylan Grazer is all of us DCU fans.

Now it’s down to the marketing team to promote this film as I think they’ll have to do it heavily and “normal people” interested so expect to see Zachary Levi on a lot of talk and breakfast shows.

Additionally, I love the use of the geek symbols to spell SHAZAM and the connection to the established DC Universe and maybe a scene taken right out of Batman v Superman.

Finally, coming out like a rock god, Jason Momoa got the crowd hyped before being joined by his cast members and director James Wan.

Ultimately, I FUCKING LOVED this epic trailer and clearly showcases the visual mastery of what Wan has done from the look of Atlantis to Aquaman and Mera jumping into the sea surrounded by the Trench.

December 14 can not come sooner!

Furthermore, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Black Manta looks so damn cool and badass! I can’t wait to see more from him and get involved with the Legion of Doom and Suicide Squad 2.

However, I am jealous of those in Hall H got to see the extended footage, which by all accounts is even better!

It was smart the studio didn't reveal any surprises as it shows Walter Hamada has full control of the property and is focusing on making these next three films as big of hits as possible.

One more thing, I’m sure fan nerds saw this but with the AT&T merger going through Warner Bros is no longer a Time Warner company but a WarnerMedia company. Moreover, the name of the universe isn’t “The World of DC” it was literally WB welcoming the Hall H audience into the DC part of the presentation.
