Actresses Up To Join Harley Quinn For DC Films' Birds Of Prey

A few weeks ago on social media, there was a rumour of potential actresses in talks to join Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in DC Films’ Birds of Prey, now The Hollywood Reporter as revealed those name in discussion to play Black Canary and Huntress.

According to THR, Warner Bros and DC Films are looking actresses for several roles that will also include Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain.

In regards of Black Canary, whose main superpower is the canary cry, the studio is looking at diverse talent for the role with Belle and A Wrinkle in Time star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (who has recently booked the lead for new HBO series Lovecraft Country, and the final name in the mix for Black Canary is Hidden Figures and all-around real-life badass, Janelle Monae.

It’s important to state it’s unclear if Monae has tested or read for the role.

I love Mbatha-Raw and think she's ideal as one of the birds, but Monae has the bigger star power. However, either actress would be great and will love to see in the film but I’m rooting for Mbatha-Raw just that little bit more.

Meanwhile, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs The World, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo), How I Met Your Mother and Black Mirror star Cristin Milioti and Margaret Qualley from The Leftovers are all in the running to play Huntress.

The top choice has to be Winstead and she’d be yet another star from Scott Pilgrim to join the superhero genre.

No offence to either Milioti, who I loved in HIMYM as the Mother but felt short-changed by how her character was handled, or Qualley who I’m sure is great in The Leftovers I just never saw that show.

Elsewhere, while I’m not surprised by the addition of a diverse actress up for one of these roles. I’m more surprised by which character they choose to “race bend” as I’d thought it would’ve been Huntress due to her being known as a black character in recent years and stuck to the traditional white, blonde girl for Canary.

But hey, what the studio, BoP director Cathy Yan and Robbie are doing is also cool. As the DCU has proven by having Aquaman be a Pacific Islander, Wonder Woman being Israeli, Deadshot being African American and The Flash is Jewish is that this franchise has no issue changing things from the comic book.

Away from Black Canary and Huntress, the next role up for grabs is Montoya with both Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez have tested for the role of the lesbian detective of Gotham City PD.

I haven’t seen either of their shows Netflix’s One Day At A Time and I Love Dick on Amazon Prime respectfully but if we’re going on looks then I’d give the slight edge to Colindrez.

However, as the US trade reveals other potential actresses are in the running for the roles so hopefully in the case for Montoya, Brooklyn Nine-Nine duo Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz and Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez all still be in the running.

Finally, as for Cassandra Cain WB are looking to for their X23 by making the character a 12-year-old and cast an Asian actress.

The studio is moving quickly to cast to hit their aim to start production in early 2019 and we will be hearing more confirmed details in the next two weeks.
